Planning a month in Vietnam

A month lets you travel the whole length of Vietnam at a comfortable pace. This route runs from north to south, using the train for the scenic central coast and flights for the longest stretches. Fly into Hanoi and home from Ho Chi Minh City.

  • Week 1: Hanoi, Sapa and Ninh Binh
  • Week 2: Ha Long Bay, Phong Nha and Hue
  • Week 3: Hoi An and Da Nang
  • Week 4: Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc

How to pace yourself

Plan three to four nights in each place, and use the night train or flights to save daytime. Keep a beach day or two in the middle and at the end.

Long-stay practicalities

  • Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport; data is very cheap.
  • Laundry services are everywhere; you can pack light.
  • Make sure your visa or visa exemption covers the full length of your stay.
  • Pharmacies are everywhere, and international clinics exist in the big cities; check your insurance.
  • Keep copies of your passport and insurance in your email or cloud storage.

Best time for a month

February to April gives the best weather across the country. Avoid travelling during the week of Tet unless you want to experience the festival, as transport is full and many shops close.
