Planning a month in the USA

A month lets you combine the great cities of the East Coast with California and the national parks of the Southwest. The route starts in New York and ends in Las Vegas, which has good connections to Europe via major US hubs.

  • Week 1: New York and Washington, D.C.
  • Week 2: San Francisco and Yosemite
  • Week 3: The Pacific coast and Los Angeles
  • Week 4: Las Vegas, Zion, the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley

Finding the right pace

Fly from the East Coast to the West Coast (around six hours), then drive. Stay at least two or three nights in each place: the distances in the West are long, and driving every day is tiring.

Practical tips for a long stay

  • Buy a US eSIM or prepaid SIM for data and maps.
  • Choose rooms with a kitchenette or a fridge to save on food.
  • Book national park lodging and popular tours early.
  • Pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens sell most medicines without prescription.
  • Keep copies of your documents in your email or cloud storage.

Best time for a month

May, June, September and October. In July and August, the desert is extremely hot and the parks are crowded.
