The route at a glance
This route follows California's most famous road trip, from San Francisco inland to Yosemite and then down the Pacific coast to Los Angeles.
- Day 1–2: San Francisco
- Day 3: Yosemite National Park
- Day 4–5: Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur
- Day 6–7: Los Angeles
Transport
Fly into San Francisco and out of Los Angeles. Pick up a rental car when you leave San Francisco on day 3 (you do not need one in the city) and return it in Los Angeles; one-way rentals cost extra. San Francisco–Yosemite Valley takes about four hours; Yosemite–Monterey about four hours; Monterey–Big Sur–San Luis Obispo about three hours without stops; and the drive on to Los Angeles another three to four hours. Highway 1 through Big Sur is sometimes closed by landslides, so check the status with Caltrans before you go.
