Planning a month in Japan
A month lets you see the great cities and the countryside, and slow down in ryokan, gardens and hot springs. The route runs from Tokyo through the mountains to Kyoto and west to Hiroshima, ending in Osaka for the flight home.
- Week 1: Tokyo, Nikkō and Mount Fuji
- Week 2: Kanazawa, Shirakawa-gō and Takayama
- Week 3: Kyoto and Nara
- Week 4: Himeji, Hiroshima, Miyajima and Osaka
Finding the right pace
Stay three to five nights in each base. Send big suitcases ahead with the luggage delivery service (takkyūbin) from hotels and convenience stores, and travel with a small bag.
Practical tips for a long stay
- Buy a Japanese eSIM or rent a pocket Wi-Fi for data and maps.
- Use coin laundries, found in every neighbourhood, or hotels with washing machines.
- Book ryokan and popular restaurants early.
- Pharmacies (yakkyoku) are common, but some medicines common in Europe, such as certain strong painkillers, are restricted; check before you bring them.
- Keep copies of your documents in your email or cloud storage.
Best time for a month
Late March to May, or October to November. A 21-day Japan Rail Pass can cover the long journeys of weeks 2 to 4.
