Tokyo at a glance

Tokyo is the world's largest metropolitan area, with around 37 million people, yet it is calm, clean and easy to explore. Rather than one centre, it is a collection of neighbourhoods, each with its own character, linked by the Yamanote Line, a loop railway around the centre.

Asakusa is the old Tokyo of temples and craft shops. Ginza is elegant shopping, and Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace lie in Marunouchi. Shibuya and Harajuku are young, fashionable and busy. Shinjuku has skyscrapers, neon, tiny bars and the city's biggest station. Akihabara is the centre of electronics, anime and manga.

Arriving

From Narita Airport, the Narita Express or the Skyliner train takes about an hour to the city. Haneda Airport is closer: the monorail or the Keikyū line reaches the centre in about 30 minutes. Taxis are excellent but expensive.

Getting around

Use a Suica or Pasmo IC card, or the version in your phone, on all trains, metros and buses. Google Maps gives exact train times and platforms. Avoid the rush hours (about 7.30–9.30 and 17.30–19.30) with luggage.
