The route at a glance
This classic first-time route follows the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka.
- Day 1–3: Tokyo
- Day 4–6: Kyoto, with a day trip to Nara
- Day 7: Osaka
Transport
Tokyo–Kyoto by Shinkansen takes about two hours and fifteen minutes; sit on the right side (seat E) towards Kyoto to see Mount Fuji on a clear day. Kyoto–Nara takes about 45 minutes by local train, and Kyoto–Osaka about 15 minutes by Shinkansen or 30 minutes by local train. Fly home from Osaka's Kansai Airport, or take the Shinkansen back to Tokyo. For this route, single tickets are usually cheaper than a 7-day Japan Rail Pass.
