Planning a month in Thailand

A month in Thailand gives you time for culture, nature and beaches. This route starts in Bangkok, goes north to the mountains, and then south to the islands. Choose the coast according to the season: the Andaman coast is best from November to April, the Gulf islands from January to August. In the main season, from January to April, you can do both, as in this plan.

  • Week 1: Bangkok, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai
  • Week 2: Chiang Mai, Pai and Chiang Rai
  • Week 3: The Andaman coast: Krabi, Railay, Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay
  • Week 4: The Gulf islands: Ko Samui, Ko Phangan and Ko Tao

How to pace yourself

Plan three to five nights in each place. Fly for the long distances: Chiang Mai to Krabi, and Ko Samui back to Bangkok. Keep beach days for rest after busy days in the cities.

Long-stay practicalities

  • Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport; data is cheap.
  • Laundry services are everywhere and cost little; you can pack light.
  • Book flights and ferries a few days ahead, and further ahead around holidays.
  • Pharmacies are everywhere, and private hospitals in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and on the islands are excellent; make sure your insurance covers them.
  • Keep copies of your passport and insurance in your email or cloud storage.

Best time for a month

January to March is ideal for this exact route. In November and December, the Andaman coast is good, but the Gulf islands are rainy; swap week four for more time on the Andaman side. From May to October, swap week three for more time on the Gulf islands.
