Planning a month in Spain
A month gives you time to see the great cities and still slow down. This route follows the train lines from north-east to south: Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Andalusia, and finally the Costa del Sol for rest. Fly into Barcelona and home from Málaga, or reverse the route.
- Week 1: Barcelona, Montserrat and Girona
- Week 2: Valencia and Madrid
- Week 3: Toledo, Segovia, Seville and Córdoba
- Week 4: Granada, Ronda, Málaga and the coast
How to pace yourself
Plan three to five nights in each base and use day trips for the rest. Changing hotel every night is tiring and expensive. Keep one or two days each week completely free. Spain is best enjoyed with long lunches and evening walks, not a checklist.
Long-stay practicalities
- Buy a local prepaid SIM or an eSIM with plenty of data; EU and EEA visitors can use their home plan at no extra cost.
- Choose apartments with a washing machine for some of the stays, and check that they are officially registered; Spain has tightened the rules for holiday rentals.
- Book the Sagrada Família, the Alhambra and the Prado in advance, and train tickets two to four weeks ahead.
- Pharmacies (farmacias, green cross sign) are excellent for minor health problems.
- Keep copies of your passport and insurance documents in your email or cloud storage.
Best time for a month-long trip
April–May and late September–October give warm weather in the whole country. If you travel in summer, swap the order so that you end in the north, or spend more time by the sea. In winter, this route still works, but start in the south where it is warmer.
