Planning a month in Portugal
A month is enough to see almost all of mainland Portugal at a relaxed pace, from the green north and the Douro vineyards to Lisbon and the sunny Algarve. This route runs from north to south. Fly into Porto and home from Faro, or reverse it.
- Week 1: Porto, the Douro Valley and the north
- Week 2: Coimbra, Lisbon and Sintra
- Week 3: Lisbon's coast and the Alentejo
- Week 4: The Algarve
How to pace yourself
Portugal is small, so you can stay longer in each place and take day trips. Plan four to six nights in each base, and keep one free day each week.
Long-stay practicalities
- EU and EEA visitors can use their home mobile plan; others can buy a local SIM or eSIM.
- Apartments with a kitchen and a washing machine are easy to find and good value.
- Book the Pena Palace, the Joanina Library and summer trains in advance.
- Pharmacies (farmácia, green cross) are helpful and well stocked.
- Keep copies of your documents in your email or cloud storage.
Best time for a month
April to June and September to October. July and August are busy and hot on the Algarve and in the Alentejo, but pleasant in the north. In winter, the Algarve is mild and quiet, and long-stay apartments are cheap.
