New York at a glance
New York is the largest city in the United States and one of the most exciting cities on earth. It has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Most visitors spend their time in Manhattan, the long, narrow island of skyscrapers, with excursions across the river to Brooklyn.
Lower Manhattan has the Financial District, the 9/11 Memorial and the ferries to the Statue of Liberty. Midtown has the Empire State Building, Times Square, Rockefeller Center and the theatres of Broadway. Central Park separates the Upper East Side, with the great museums, from the Upper West Side. Greenwich Village, SoHo and the Lower East Side are full of shops, bars and restaurants.
Arriving
JFK Airport is connected to Manhattan by the AirTrain and subway or the Long Island Rail Road (about one hour). From Newark Airport in New Jersey, take the AirTrain and NJ Transit trains to Penn Station (about 40 minutes). A taxi from JFK to Manhattan has a flat fare of around 70 dollars plus tolls and tip.
Getting around
The subway runs 24 hours a day. Pay by tapping a contactless card or phone at the turnstile (OMNY); after twelve rides in seven days, the rest of the week is free. Manhattan's grid of numbered streets makes walking easy: avenues run north–south and streets east–west.
