Planning a month in Mauritius

A month gives you time to live like a local: change base every week, explore every coast, hike the mountains, learn to dive or kitesurf, and visit one of the neighbouring islands. This plan uses three bases on Mauritius and one week on Rodrigues or Réunion.

  • Week 1: The west coast and the south-west
  • Week 2: The south and the central plateau
  • Week 3: The north and the east
  • Week 4: Rodrigues or Réunion

How to pace yourself

Stay a full week in each base and mix active days with beach days. Mauritius is best enjoyed slowly.

Long-stay practicalities

  • Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport.
  • Rent apartments or villas with a kitchen; supermarkets and markets are well stocked.
  • A hire car for the whole month is often cheaper per day than shorter rentals.
  • Pharmacies and private clinics are good; make sure your insurance covers you.
  • Check how long you may stay without a visa, and keep your return ticket ready.

Best time for a month

April to June and September to December. Avoid January to March if you want to minimise the risk of cyclones. July to September is ideal for kitesurfing and whale watching, but cooler.
