Mauritius at a glance
Many visitors spend their whole stay at a beach resort, and that is a fine way to relax. But even with only a few days, it is worth leaving the sunbed to see the island's mountains, waterfalls, markets and multicultural towns. This guide shows you how to see the highlights in one, two or three days, whether you are on a short stay, a cruise stop or want to plan the first days of a longer holiday.
The capital, Port Louis, lies on the north-west coast. The north, around Grand Baie, has busy beaches and nightlife. The east coast has long white beaches and Île aux Cerfs. The south and south-west have the most dramatic scenery: Le Morne, Chamarel and the Black River Gorges. The central plateau, with the towns of Curepipe and Quatre Bornes, is cooler and greener.
Arriving
SSR International Airport lies in the south-east, near Mahébourg. Transfers to the hotels on the west and north coasts take about 45–75 minutes. Most hotels arrange transfers; taxis are available at the airport, and car hire desks are in the arrival hall.
Getting around
With only a few days, the easiest options are a hire car (driving on the left) or a taxi driver for the day, who also works as an informal guide. Agree on the route and the price in advance; a full-day island tour with a driver costs about 3,000–4,500 Rs per car.
