Lisbon at a glance

Lisbon is built on seven hills above the wide Tagus river, close to where it meets the Atlantic. It is a city of steep cobbled streets, yellow trams, tiled façades, viewpoints (miradouros) and long evenings outdoors. It is also relaxed, affordable for a Western European capital, and only half an hour from beaches and the palaces of Sintra.

The centre is the flat Baixa district, rebuilt in a grid after the great earthquake of 1755. To the east, the old Moorish quarter of Alfama climbs up to the castle. To the west, Chiado and Bairro Alto are the elegant and the nightlife districts. Belém lies a few kilometres west along the river.

Arriving

Lisbon airport is close to the city. The metro (red line) takes you to the centre in about 20–25 minutes with one change; the Aerobus goes directly to the Baixa and Cais do Sodré. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are reasonably priced.

Getting around

Buy a Navegante card at any metro station and load it with credit or a 24-hour pass, which covers the metro, buses, trams and the historic lifts. Tram 28 rattles through Alfama, Baixa and Estrela and is a sight in itself, but it is crowded and a pickpocket hotspot; ride it early in the morning. The historic Glória funicular has been closed since a fatal accident in 2025, so check the status of the funiculars before you go. For the hills, the Santa Justa Lift and the metro save your legs, and taxis are cheap.

Book these before you travel
