Kochi at a glance
Kochi (also known as Cochin) has been a trading port for spices for more than 600 years, visited by Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders. The result is a unique mix: Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront, the oldest European church in India, a 16th-century synagogue, Dutch colonial houses, and spice warehouses that still smell of pepper and ginger.
The city is spread over islands and the mainland. Most visitors stay in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, the historic districts on the peninsula, which are walkable and full of cafés and art galleries. Ernakulam, across the water, is the modern city centre with the main railway station, malls and the metro.
Arriving
Cochin International Airport is about 30 kilometres north of Ernakulam and 40 kilometres from Fort Kochi, a one to one and a half hour drive. Prepaid taxis and ride-hailing apps are available. Trains arrive at Ernakulam Junction (also called Ernakulam South).
Getting around
In Fort Kochi, walk or rent a bicycle. Auto-rickshaws are everywhere; agree on the price first. Public ferries and the modern Water Metro connect Fort Kochi with Ernakulam and the islands; the boat ride is cheap and scenic. The Kochi Metro serves Ernakulam and the airport road.
