Planning a month in Kerala
A month lets you experience Kerala slowly and deeply: the history of Kochi, the cool hills, the wildlife, the backwaters, a stay at an Ayurveda retreat, and the less-visited north with its unique Theyyam rituals. This plan starts in Kochi and ends in the south, near Thiruvananthapuram airport.
- Week 1: Kochi, central Kerala and the north
- Week 2: Munnar and Thekkady
- Week 3: The backwaters and an Ayurveda retreat
- Week 4: Varkala, Kovalam and Thiruvananthapuram
How to pace yourself
Stay three to five nights in each place. Use a car with a driver for the hills and trains along the coast. Leave room for rest days; the heat and humidity make slow travel more pleasant.
Long-stay practicalities
- Make sure your e-Visa covers the full length of your stay.
- Buy a local SIM card with your passport and visa; ask your hotel for help.
- Laundry services are cheap and common.
- Private hospitals in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are good; make sure your insurance covers them.
- Keep copies of your passport, visa and insurance in your email or cloud storage.
Best time for a month
November to February. If you want to see Theyyam, plan the north for December to March. If your main goal is Ayurveda, consider the monsoon months of June to August, which are considered the best for treatments and have lower prices.
