The route at a glance

This is the classic first trip to Italy, and it is classic for a reason. Rome, Florence and Venice are three completely different cities, all connected by fast trains. Fly into Rome and home from Venice, or the other way around.

  • Day 1–3: Rome
  • Day 4–5: Florence
  • Day 6: A day in Tuscany (Siena, San Gimignano or the Val d'Orcia)
  • Day 7: Venice

If you can, add an extra night in Venice. It is the most magical city in the evening, after the day visitors have left.

Transport between the cities

Rome to Florence takes about one hour and 35 minutes, and Florence to Venice about two hours, with Frecciarossa or Italo trains. Arrive in Venice at Santa Lucia station, which is right on the Grand Canal; do not get off at Venezia Mestre on the mainland unless your hotel is there. Book the high-speed trains ahead for the lowest fares.

What to book

  • Rome: the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums.
  • Florence: the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia and the climb of the Duomo dome.
  • Venice: Doge's Palace and, if you like, the Basilica's terrace and treasury.
  • Check if your Venice day falls on a day with an access fee for day visitors.
