Istanbul at a glance

Istanbul is the only great city spread across two continents, divided by the Bosphorus strait between Europe and Asia. For almost 1,600 years it was an imperial capital, first as Byzantine Constantinople and then as the Ottoman capital, and the skyline of domes and minarets shows it. Today it is a city of more than 15 million people, with ferries criss-crossing the water, busy bazaars, trendy neighbourhoods and an endless food scene.

The historic peninsula, Sultanahmet, holds Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar. Across the Golden Horn lie Karaköy, Galata and Beyoğlu, with İstiklal Avenue and Taksim Square. On the Asian side, Kadıköy and Moda are lively local neighbourhoods.

Arriving

Istanbul Airport (IST) lies about 40 kilometres north of the centre. The M11 metro and the Havaist airport buses connect it with the city in about one to one and a half hours. Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW), on the Asian side, has buses and a metro connection. Taxis are plentiful; use the meter or a taxi app.

Getting around

Buy an Istanbulkart, which works on the tram, metro, buses, funiculars and ferries. The T1 tram runs through Sultanahmet to Karaköy and Kabataş. The ferries across the Bosphorus are cheap, frequent and one of the best experiences in the city.
