Hanoi at a glance
Hanoi, Vietnam's capital for most of the last thousand years, is a city of lakes, tree-lined boulevards, French colonial villas, ancient pagodas and a chaotic, irresistible Old Quarter. Millions of motorbikes buzz through the streets, while elderly people do tai chi by the lakes at dawn. It is the best place to start a trip to Vietnam, and a great base for the bays and mountains of the north.
The centre is compact. The Old Quarter, with its 36 streets named after the goods once sold there, lies just north of Hoan Kiem Lake. The French Quarter, with the Opera House and wide avenues, lies to the south-east. The Ba Dinh district, with the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature, is to the west, and the large West Lake (Ho Tay) to the north.
Arriving
Noi Bai airport lies about 30 kilometres north of the centre, a 45–60 minute drive. Ride-hailing apps and taxis are the easiest option; airport bus 86 goes to the Old Quarter and the railway station.
Getting around
Walk in the Old Quarter and around the lake, and use ride-hailing apps for longer distances. On weekend evenings (Friday to Sunday), the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake are closed to traffic and become a large pedestrian area with families, street performers and games.
Neighbourhoods in brief
- The Old Quarter: narrow streets, shophouses, street food and bars.
- Hoan Kiem Lake and the French Quarter: the Opera House, elegant hotels and the Hoa Lo prison museum.
- Ba Dinh: the Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace and the One Pillar Pagoda.
- West Lake (Tay Ho): cafés, expat restaurants and sunset views.
