Planning a month in Greece
A month in Greece lets you combine the classical sites of the mainland with island hopping and a slower final week on Crete. This route starts and ends in Athens, so you can fly in and out of the same airport, or fly home from Heraklion or Chania on Crete.
- Week 1: Athens, Delphi and Meteora
- Week 2: Nafplio and the Peloponnese
- Week 3: The Cyclades: Naxos, Paros and Santorini
- Week 4: Crete
How to pace yourself
Greece rewards slow travel. Plan at least three nights on each island, because ferry days take time. Leave room for a day at the beach after every few days of sightseeing, and keep a buffer day before your flight home in case of ferry cancellations.
Long-stay practicalities
- EU and EEA visitors can use their home mobile plan; others can buy a local SIM or eSIM.
- Choose apartments with a kitchen and washing machine on the islands.
- Book ferries for July and August early, but keep some flexibility for the weather.
- Pharmacies (farmakeio, green cross) are well stocked and helpful.
- Keep copies of your documents in your email or cloud storage.
Best time for a month
May to June and September to early October. In July and August, the islands are full and expensive, and the mainland is very hot. From November to April, the islands are quiet and many hotels close, but this route still works if you spend more time in Athens, the Peloponnese and Crete.
