The route at a glance
This route combines history and island life. You start in Athens, take the ferry to Naxos, the largest and greenest of the Cyclades, and continue to Santorini, the most spectacular. From Santorini you can fly home directly in summer, or fly or sail back to Athens.
- Day 1–2: Athens
- Day 3–4: Naxos
- Day 5–7: Santorini
Why Naxos and not Mykonos?
Mykonos is famous for nightlife and is very expensive. Naxos has long sandy beaches, traditional mountain villages, ancient ruins and excellent local food at more reasonable prices, and it is on the same ferry line as Santorini. If you want parties, swap Naxos for Mykonos; the route works the same way.
Ferries
Ferries from Piraeus to Naxos take about 3.5 hours by high-speed boat and 5–6 hours by conventional ferry. Naxos to Santorini takes about 1.5–2 hours by fast boat and 2–3 hours by ferry. Book ahead in summer, choose morning departures in case of delays, and be at the port 30–45 minutes before departure. In August, strong winds can cause cancellations, so do not plan a ferry on the same day as your flight home.
