Planning a month in France
A month lets you see the very different faces of France: the capital, the green north with its history, the castles of the Loire, the gastronomic capital Lyon, the Alps, and the sunny south. This route starts in Paris and ends in Nice.
- Week 1: Paris and Versailles
- Week 2: Normandy, Mont-Saint-Michel and the Loire Valley
- Week 3: Lyon and the Alps
- Week 4: Provence and the Riviera
How to pace yourself
Plan three to five nights in each base, and use a hire car for the countryside weeks. Keep one free day each week. France is best enjoyed with long lunches, markets and evening walks.
Long-stay practicalities
- EU and EEA visitors can use their home mobile plan; others can buy a local SIM or eSIM.
- Choose some apartments or gîtes (holiday cottages) with a kitchen and washing machine.
- Book the TGV two to four weeks ahead, and the Paris museums and Versailles in advance.
- Pharmacies (green cross) are very helpful for minor health issues.
- Keep copies of your documents in your email or cloud storage.
Best time for a month
May to June and September are ideal. In July and August, the coast and Provence are crowded, but the Alps are at their best. In winter, swap the Alps hiking for skiing and Provence for Christmas markets in Alsace.
