Dubrovnik at a glance
Dubrovnik, the "Pearl of the Adriatic", is a walled medieval city on the sea, with marble streets, baroque churches and red roofs surrounded by massive stone walls. For centuries it was the independent Republic of Ragusa, a rich maritime power. It is breathtaking, and also very popular: on busy summer days, thousands of cruise passengers fill the narrow streets. Visit early in the morning and in the evening, and use the middle of the day for the sea.
The Old Town (Stari Grad) is car-free and small; you can walk across it in ten minutes. The Ploče gate leads east to Banje beach, and the Pile gate leads west to the bus stops and Lapad, a residential peninsula with hotels and beaches. Gruž, to the north-west, is the port for ferries and cruise ships.
Arriving
Dubrovnik airport lies about 20 kilometres south-east of the city. Airport buses go to the Pile gate and the main bus station in about 30 minutes. Taxis take about 25 minutes.
Getting around
Walk in the Old Town. Local buses (Libertas) connect the Pile gate with Lapad, Gruž and Ploče; buy tickets from the driver or at kiosks. Parking near the Old Town is very limited and expensive. The Dubrovnik Pass includes the city walls, several museums and public transport.
