Planning a month in Croatia

A month lets you see the whole of Croatia, from the elegant capital and the Italian-flavoured Istria to the national parks, the Dalmatian cities and a slow island hop. This route runs from north to south. Fly into Zagreb and home from Dubrovnik.

  • Week 1: Zagreb and Istria
  • Week 2: Plitvice, Zadar, Šibenik and Krka
  • Week 3: Split and the islands of Brač and Hvar
  • Week 4: Vis, Korčula, Pelješac and Dubrovnik

How to pace yourself

Stay three to five nights in each place, and give the islands time: ferry days are slow. Keep one free beach day each week.

Long-stay practicalities

  • EU and EEA visitors can use their home mobile plan; others can buy a local SIM or eSIM.
  • Rent apartments with a kitchen and washing machine; they are common and good value outside July and August.
  • Hire a car for Istria and the national parks; on the islands, a car or scooter is useful but not essential.
  • Book ferries for cars well ahead in summer.
  • Pharmacies (ljekarna) are helpful for minor health problems.

Best time for a month

May, June and September. In July and August, prices are high and the coast is crowded.
