Bangkok at a glance

Bangkok is huge, hot, noisy and exhilarating, a city of glittering temples and glass towers, floating markets and mega-malls, street stalls and rooftop bars. It can feel overwhelming at first, but it is surprisingly easy to navigate if you use the river and the trains.

The historic heart is Rattanakosin, on an island formed by the Chao Phraya river and canals, with the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and many other temples. Wat Arun lies across the river. Chinatown (Yaowarat) is just south-east of the old town. The modern centre, with Siam Square's malls, Sukhumvit's hotels and nightlife, and the business district of Silom, is further east and served by the BTS Skytrain.

Arriving

Most international flights land at Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK). The Airport Rail Link runs to Phaya Thai station in about 30 minutes, where you can change to the BTS. Official metered taxis leave from the public taxi stand on level 1; insist on the meter, and expect to pay the airport surcharge and motorway tolls. Low-cost airlines use Don Mueang airport (DMK), connected to the city by the SRT Red Line train and buses.

Getting around

For the old town, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat; the orange-flag boats stop at the main piers, such as Tha Chang for the Grand Palace and Tha Tien for Wat Pho. Cross-river ferries go from Tha Tien to Wat Arun. For the modern city, use the BTS and the MRT; avoid rush-hour traffic in taxis. Use ride-hailing apps for door-to-door trips. Tuk-tuks are fun for short distances, but agree on the price first.
