Athens at a glance

Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the Acropolis still rises above it like a crown. But it is also a busy, modern capital with street art, rooftop bars, lively markets and some of the best food in Greece. Many travellers only stop here for a night on the way to the islands, but two or three days are needed to enjoy it properly.

The historic centre is compact. The Acropolis stands in the middle, surrounded by the old neighbourhoods of Plaka and Anafiotika, the flea market area of Monastiraki, the ancient Agora and the lively streets of Psyrri. Syntagma Square, with the parliament, is a short walk to the east.

Arriving

Athens airport lies about 30 kilometres east of the centre. Metro line 3 (blue) runs directly to Syntagma and Monastiraki in about 40 minutes. The X95 express bus goes to Syntagma and is cheaper but slower in traffic. Taxis have a fixed fare to the centre. If you come from the islands by ferry, Piraeus port is connected by metro line 1 (green) to Monastiraki.

Getting around

Walk in the centre. The metro is useful for longer distances, and a 90-minute ticket covers all city transport. There are also 24-hour, 5-day and tourist tickets including the airport. You can tap a contactless bank card at the metro gates.

Book these before you travel

  • The Acropolis: timed tickets; choose the first slot of the day in summer.
  • A combined ticket if you plan to visit several ancient sites (the Agora, the Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, the Temple of Olympian Zeus).
  • The Acropolis Museum: tickets can be bought on the day, but booking saves time.
  • A performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus if you visit in summer.

Neighbourhoods in brief

  • Plaka: the old town below the Acropolis, with pedestrian lanes and tavernas.
  • Anafiotika: tiny white houses on the Acropolis slope that feel like an island village.
  • Monastiraki: the flea market, souvlaki shops and rooftop bars.
  • Psyrri: street art, bars and meze restaurants.
  • Koukaki: a residential area near the Acropolis Museum with good cafés.
  • Kolonaki: an elegant area for shopping and cafés, at the foot of Lycabettus Hill.
