About the product
The CEO job is unlike any other. You're no longer the best at anything; your job is to make sure everything gets done, by others, in the right direction. This book explains how great CEOs think: the seven mindset shifts from executive to chief executive, how they spend their week, the decisions only a CEO can make, how to work with the board, investors and the leadership team, the numbers that matter, the traps that derail new CEOs, and a concrete plan for your first 90 days. The Loneliest Chair
On your first day as CEO, something strange happens. People start laughing a little harder at your jokes. Conversations go quiet when you walk into a room. Your inbox fills with problems that have already passed through three other people who couldn't solve them. And for the first time in your career, there's nobody above you to take the hard call.
The CEO role is often described as the loneliest job in the company. Not because CEOs are alone, they're surrounded by people all day, but because they carry a responsibility nobody else carries in the same way. The CEO owns the outcome. Not a function, not a project, not a number. The whole thing.
What the CEO actually does
Strip away the titles and the corner office, and the CEO has a surprisingly short job description. A good CEO does five things that nobody else in the company can do:
- Sets the direction: where the company is going, and just as importantly, where it isn't.
- Builds the team: hires, develops and, when needed, replaces the leaders who run the business.
- Allocates capital and attention: decides where money, people and time go.
- Shapes the culture: through what they reward, tolerate and model every day.
- Represents the company: to the board, investors, customers, regulators and the public.
Everything else should, over time, be done by someone else.
Why the mindset matters more than the skills
Most CEOs get the job because they were excellent at something: selling, running operations, building products, managing money. The irony is that the skills that got them there are rarely the skills that make them successful in the role. A great sales leader who becomes CEO and keeps selling will neglect the rest of the company. A brilliant engineer who keeps reviewing code will never build an engineering organization that doesn't need them.
That's why this book is about mindset rather than technique. Techniques can be learned in a weekend. Mindset is what you fall back on at 11 p.m. when the quarter is slipping, your best executive just resigned and the board meeting is in two days.
