- The mindset shifts from IT manager to business technology leader
- Digital transformation, data and AI from the CIO's chair
- Managing technology budgets, vendors and large system projects
About the product
The CIO runs the technology the whole company depends on every day: the systems, data, infrastructure and digital tools that let people do their jobs, serve customers and make decisions. Great CIOs have moved far beyond "keeping the lights on". They lead digital transformation, turn data into a strategic asset, manage enormous budgets and vendor relationships, protect the company against cyber threats and help every leader get more from technology. This book explains how they think: the mindset shifts from IT manager to business leader, how a CIO spends the week, the decisions that matter most, transformation, data and AI, vendors and costs, security, the traps that derail new CIOs, and a 90-day plan.

Beyond Keeping the Lights On
For decades, the IT department was judged mainly on one thing: did everything work? Email up, servers running, laptops delivered, help desk answering. That still matters. When systems fail, the whole company feels it immediately.
But it's no longer enough. Today almost every business process runs on technology, and almost every strategy depends on it. The Chief Information Officer is now expected to be a business leader who uses technology to make the whole company faster, smarter and more competitive.
What the CIO owns
- Enterprise systems: the core platforms the company runs on, such as ERP, CRM, HR and finance systems.
- Infrastructure and operations: networks, cloud, devices, data centers, support.
- Data and analytics: making the company's data reliable, accessible and useful.
- Digital transformation: using technology to change how the company works and serves customers.
- Information security: often together with, or including, the CISO.
- Technology governance: budgets, vendors, architecture standards and risk.
CIO and CTO
In companies that have both, the CIO usually focuses on internal technology, the systems the company uses, while the CTO focuses on the technology the company builds and sells. In others, one person covers both. Agree clearly on the boundaries, because overlap and gaps both cause problems.
The two-speed challenge
Every CIO faces the same tension: running reliable, secure, cost-efficient operations, and at the same time driving change and innovation. Neglect the first, and the business loses trust in you. Neglect the second, and the business goes around you to buy its own technology. Great CIOs do both.
