Before We Begin
Some stories refuse to let go. Not because they were invented to frighten us, but because they happened. On ordinary days, in ordinary towns, while people were shopping, working and taking a walk. This book is about five such days. All of them took place in Asia, all in recent years, and all of them ended in a courtroom. Each story is built on what is known from court rulings and reliable news reporting. Where we describe the atmosphere, it is the narrator's picture of the place, not new facts. The victims were people with names, families and plans for the future. Out of respect for them and for those left behind, we do not name them. The perpetrators have been convicted, and they are named. Turn down the lights, if you dare. We begin by a river in Thailand.
